Okotoks Bisons
Bisons Winning Streak Snapped
- Submitted by

The Okotoks Bisons had their season opening winning streak snapped but have yet to lose in regulation.

Friday night the Bisons earned their third shutout of the season and second consecutive as they defeated Blackfalds 3-0.

It took just over seven minutes for Okotoks to open the scoring as Kyle Dunville (assists to Nicholas Murrell and Kody Briggs at 7:04) used Nicholas Murrell as a screen and wristed a shot behind Kaleb Virgo   Four minutes later a mad scramble in front of the net allowed the Bisons to double their lead. Virgo made a couple saves before a third chance by Kyle Harrison (assist to Connor Taylor at 11:22) found the back of the net. Shots favored the Bisons 15-8 in the opening frame.

There was just one goal in the middle period, and it happened late. On a delayed penalty Kody Briggs (assists to Bryan Weber and Mitch Wolfe at 17:48) ripped a shot from the point that would find a way through traffic and under the arm of Virgo to make it 3-0. Shots favored Okotoks in the second 15-7 and were 30-15 in the hockey game.

There was no scoring in the third period despite a lot of pressure from the Bisons. Shots ended up 17-3 Okotoks and finished 47-18 in the hockey game.

Saturday night is when the Bisons fell for the first time this season, as they lost 2-1 in overtime to the High River Flyers.

Midway through the first period Austin O'Bray (assist to Brandt Black at 8:17) notched his team leading eighth goal of the season when he wristed a shot from the left faceoff circle beating Chantz Vinck to open the scoring. Late in the first period former Bison Jharin Bantugan (assists from Michael McTighe and Joshua Fleck at 17:31) jumped on a loose puck and knocked it behind Devin Reagan. That goal snapped the Bisons shutout streak at 156:15. Shots on goal were even 15-15 in the opening frame.

There was no scoring in either the second or third period as both goaltenders stood tall to keep the game tied 1-1. Shots in the second favored the Bisons 14-10 and were 29-25. Third period shots heavily favored the Bisons 16-6, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Shots after regulation were 45-31 in favor of Okotoks.

Overtime would get decided on a power play for the Flyers. Michael McTighe ( assists to Tyler Alger and Nic Kennedy at 4:28) would hammer a one timer over the glove hand of Devin Reagan to give High River a 2-1 victory. Shots were even 4-4 in overtime but favored the Bisons 49-35.

The Bisons will look to bounce back with a pair of home games next weekend starting on Friday night when they host the Coaldale Copperheads at 8:00. Sunday Okotoks will host Three Hills at 1:15, both games will be at the Murray Arena.
