Bisons remain in first place after a weekend split

The Okotoks Bisons split their two games on the weekend falling 6-2 to rival Coaldale on Friday before bouncing back with an 11-0 thrashing of Three Hills.

Friday was a rough game for the boys in blue as they dug a big hole against their rivals from Coaldale. The Copperheads would get the lone goal of the first period on a broken play. Ty Abbott picked up a loose puck at the side of the net and fanned on a pass but was still able to get the puck to Mitchell Konschuk who would beat Bisons goaltender Devin Reagan to open the scoring. Shots in the first period were 11-8 Copperheads.

Things got worse for the Bisons in the middle part of the second period. Jayden Smith would get a partial breakaway and just squeak the puck between the pads of Reagan to make it 2-0. Less than three minutes later Levi Anderson floated a shot from the point that would get through a couple of bodies in front of the net and handcuff Reagan to give Coaldale a 3-0 lead. The Copperheads would then add a power play goal from Jayden Smith as he rifled a shot from the point to make it 4-0. A scary incident for the Bisons and their fans took place with 5:28 to go in the second period as forward Jason Horn had a shorthanded breakaway but got tied up by a Coaldale defenseman and went hard into the end boards. Horn stayed down on the ice and eventually needed to be stretchered off the ice. (Note Horn was taken to the hospital and released the same night, he is hoping to be in the lineup this Friday against Airdrie) Jayden Smith received a match penalty for slew footing. Both teams were sent to their dressing rooms and 5:28 was added to the third period.

Okotoks would claw back into the game with a couple of goals on the 5:00 major power play. Devon Barlow snapped a wrist shot from the point that made it through traffic and goaltender Nolan Berner. Just over a minute later it was Dallas Otto from almost the exact same spot that would find some room on Berner and the Bisons would cut the Copperhead lead to 4-2 after two periods. Shots on goal in the second were 17-15 for the Copperheads and were 28-23 after two periods.

Play continued in the third but it was Coaldale that would put the game away and stifle any attempt at a comeback by the Bisons just 3:08 into the final frame.  Tyler Anderson would pounce on a rebound and bury the puck to make it 5-2. Late in the third, the Copperheads would finish the scoring as Brandyn Howg took a pass from Tyler Anderson and snuck a shot over the arm of Reagan to make it 6-2. Shots favored the Copperheads 18-6 in the third and 46-29 in the hockey game.

Okotoks would bounce back on Sunday and dominate the Three Hills Thrashers from start to finish and roll to an 11-0 victory.

It would take just 1:37 of steady pressure for the Bisons to find the back of the net as Bryan Weber snuck in off the point and flicked the puck under the arm of Devon Carroll. A few minutes later Kody Briggs pounced on a rebound after Mitch Wolfe was stopped and doubled the Bison lead to 2-0. Midway through the first period, Jagger Thiessen would give the Bisons a 3-0 lead as he would poke the puck into the back of the net. Just over three minutes later Austin O’Bray snapped a wrist shot that snuck through Carroll to make it 4-0. Late in the opening period, Nicholas Lush would get a partial breakaway and put the puck top shelf to give the Bisons a 5-0 lead after one period of play. Shots were 31-2 in favor of Okotoks.

Okotoks would get just a pair of goals in the second frame. Brandt Black took a cross ice pass from Nicolas Lush and would make no mistake in snapping the puck into the net. In the final minutes of the second period, Nic Jordan would sneak in from the point and blast a one timer over the shoulder of Carroll to make it 7-0 Bisons after two periods. Shots once again favored Okotoks 28-5 in the second and 59-7 through 40 minutes.

Just 4:00 into the third period Kyle Harrison would find the back of the net to make it 8-0 Okotoks. Just over three minutes later Devyn Stewart followed Tyler Bordt in and pounced on a rebound to give the Bisons a 9-0 lead. The double digit goal would come just three minutes later as Jagger Thiessen slipped his second of the night between the pads of Carroll. Less than two minutes after that Austin O’Bray would pick up his team leading 11th goal of the season to finish off the scoring 12:19 into the third period. Shots in the third favored the Bisons 30-6 and finished 89-13 in favor of the boys in blue.

Okotoks is back in action on Friday night when they travel to Airdrie for their lone game of the weekend. You can catch that game on the Bisons MIXLR channel by following this link: http://mixlr.com/okotoks-bisons/
